While the office design team here at Oaktree Interiors are always excited and ready to tackle projects for new clients, there's a degree of gratification we feel when previous clients return to us to carry out extra (or completely new) work for them.

The latest client to return to us is Corsair, a PC components and peripherals company whose UK office is currently based in Wokingham. Due to their existing building being in line for demolition, they recently approached us to carry out their design and fit out works for their new office. Seeking to stay local, they found the ideal location at Winnersh Triangle Business Park, where several other successful businesses already reside.

With the current situation with COVID-19 inmind, our team quickly mobilised to design the project, working alongside Corsair to understand their precise requirements and making recommendations where we felt appropriate. The result was a design and build plan that not only maintains the influence of the existing space but also makes concessions for COVID-safe and remote working practices.

The future value of COVID-safe workplaces

Traditionally, a Mud Room is an American term used for a home's casual secondary entrance; a dedicated space for people to remove their muddy shoes and wet clothing before entering the main parts of the house. An office Mud Room is a separated facility that will be installed at the entrance so employees are encouraged to enter, sanitise and wash their hands before proceeding to the main office and their desks (some even combine it with a cloakroom to save on space).

Corsair's Mud Room has been specifically designed to fit in with the design elements of the rest of the office, as well as offering an increased biophilic effect through its usage of greenery and the dark and light brown colours that evoke the thought of nature (and despite the name, no actual mud is involved!)

To prevent the spread of the virus, COVID-safe working practices will be the norm for the foreseeable future, but what about the future beyond this pandemic? Are required safe-at-work changes worth investing in when the situation could (hopefully!) be different next year?

Remote, Flexible Workplaces

Remote working has undoubtedly been the focus throughout 2020; many offices were already offering this to their employees beforehand, but many more were not and as such, found the transition difficult. The pandemic has hastened the need to have facilities and technology in place offer remote working capabilities; allowing people to choose when, where and who they work with.

'Remote working' does not just mean 'working from home'; it can mean working in different parts of the office design with different people. It gives businesses carte blanche to design the office with flexibility in mind; catering it towards the needs of the people who work there and the products they create. Having such flexibility will boostone's work-life balance, collaboration and the quality of work in general. Something well worth considering for any business.

In the future, the office will be a hybrid of home and office working; how the balance sits will depend on the business, its work and the needs of its employees. It's only by understanding how the office can be transformed to support both can this be achieved; and this where the Oaktree team can help.
